I love using my Tom-tom One GPS its very handy when driving in unfamiliar places, and provides for stress free travelling. Only one problem is that by default the Safety Camera Alerts are not enabled by default for Australian Tom-tom owners. So pretty much everyone in Australia with all versions of the Tom-tom One are missing a pretty major feature that the rest of the world’s One users get. You may also find that if you try to update the unit to enable the Safety Cameras it will always show a connection error message. But never fear there is a fix for this!
I must give credit to my uncle for finding this one out – after bugging the Tom-Tom support line (02 8875 1700) he finally got them to fix this problem.
For those who’ve never used a computer before this may prove difficult to fix, but for the other 80% of the world these days it is a straight forward procedure.
1. Plug in your Tom-tom One into your computer via its USB cable.
2. Once plugged in it should mount itself like a USB thumb drive would.
3. Find that mounted device, then find the folder:
“Australia-Map”
(If you can’t see this folder then you will be saving the files into the “Australia” folder)
5. You will then have a “fwsafetycamerafiles” folder with various files in it, copy and paste those files directly into the “Australia-Map” folder on your Tom-tom One.
6. Eject the Tom-tom USB mounted drive from your computer, then restart your One unit.
Once the files are in the Australia-Map folder, please follow the steps below to set up warnings for when you approach the fixed red light and speed cameras.
1. Tap the centre of the screen to bring up the main menu.
2. Choose the ‘Change preferences’ icon
3. Go to page 2 by tapping the right arrow key
4. Select ‘Enable/disable POI
5. Scroll the list of POI and place a tick in the box next to Speed Camera POI. This will allow the speed camera icon to appear on the map
6. Go to ‘Manage POIs’ on page 2 of the Preference menu
7. Select the ‘Warn when near POI’ icon
8. Scroll the list of POI and select the Speed Camera POI
9. Now you will be asked to set the distance from an approaching speed or red light camera that you want to hear the warning tone
10. Here you can select the warning tone you want to use
11. Do NOT tick the box that asks to warn only if POI is on route
12. The warnings for the fixed speed and red light cameras are now set
13. Repeat this also for school zones
Then your done! You’ve now got a fully functional Tom-tom One unit, thanks to my uncle and Tom-tom Australia.
Please note that you may need to have a current subscription with Tom-tom and a Plus-services account to allow this activation to work – most new Tom-tom owners get to try this service for free the first month.
(Your tom-tom unit has its own unique serial code which can be tracked, so don’t use this fix unless you have legally subscribed to tom-tom plus services, i take no responsibility for any actions which you may perform which may be considered immoral or illegal – this description and information is provided for educational purposes only).
[...] really only because we don’t want to get fined – why else would so many people have TomToms tell them when there are cameras [...]
